Olivia found Emily chatting with a few of the guests on the deck. She had so much to tell her, and it felt like time was starting to run out. They’d been stuck in the middle of the ocean for hours now, and Olivia was sure that they’d eventually make it back to shore. She wanted answers before then, and she’d do anything she could to get them.

And now she had yet another clue that could lead her to the truth. Emily noticed the urgency in Olivia’s gaze, so she excused herself and approached Olivia. Emily wrapped her arms around herself. The cold was starting to seep in now as the night drew on and the waves crashed more insistently against the hull.

“What’s going on?” Emily asked, searching Olivia’s face for clues. “Did you find something?”

“Just had an interesting conversation with the bosun,” Olivia whispered. “Another of Darcie’s conquests, it seems. But he told me some things I didn’t know. First, Darcie had solid plans to break things off with Charlie. That’s a motive right there. And second, he told me that Darcie doesn’t usually drink, but that she seemed drunk tonight. I wonder if that played a part in her death. Apparently, she was a lot more loose-lipped than usual tonight.

“Do you think maybe she said something that provoked the killer?” Emily asked.

Olivia nodded. “It’s a possibility.”

Emily furrowed her brow in thought. “But aren’t we assuming that the killing was pre-planned? After all, we have the anonymous tip implying that something would happen tonight, and then there’s the fact that someone tampered with the engine. Why would someone do that if it was an accident or a spur of the moment thing?”

Emily had a point. The truth was, Olivia wasn’t sure that her conversation with the bosun brought her any closer to the truth at all. They’d had suspicions about Charlie from the start, given his attitude toward Darcie and the fact that he was the focus of their investigation in the first place. The only new lead that they had was that Charlie tended to be belligerent when drunk, which was entirely believable based on what Olivia had personally seen. However, that didn’t prove he was a murderer.

They needed to speak to Charlie again. They needed to press him further and see what he’d spill. He’d been in a foul mood when they spoke earlier in the night, but perhaps that might work in their favor. If Olivia could get him to crack, then she might even be able to get him to fly off the handle and show his true colors. And if he did, Olivia would be ready for him. There was no way that a man like Charlie could evade the truth from two experienced FBI agents. Olivia felt glad that she had her gun stowed away in her bag; she was ready for any unforeseen reactions from Charlie or anyone else for that matter.

“I want to grill Charlie again,” Olivia said. “He’s still our best bet right now.
